I’ve been a journalist for (clears throat) 25 years, and I’ve been writing fiction for 10 years. I know a great editor is the difference between looking like an idiot and bordering on brilliance. :) I’ve been lucky enough to have great editors for most of my career. I’ve also had a few bad ones.
For years, the No. 1, question I get when teaching writing workshops is, “Can you look at my manuscript?” The answer is usually, “no.” Legal reasons and time constraints keep me from perusing every manuscript that comes my way. But I always feel guilty, even when I know I shouldn’t.
It’s one of the reasons I created HelpMeEdit.net. I wanted to provide a service that would help writers take their work to the next level. To that end, I’m only working with the best editors in the industry. Most of them are actively working for publishing houses, and doing a little freelance on the side. Turns out I’m not the only one with thousands in college loans to pay off. :)
It’s one of those weird universe things where I reached out to one or two people and ended up with a group of really wonderful editors. No matter what shape your manuscript is in, these guys can help you pull it together. They do content, line and copy editing.
We also have a slew of published authors who help out with the critiques. Sometimes you need someone else to say, “Yes, you have a real book. It’s good, but maybe you want to look at a few big picture things…” These are multi-published authors who know what it takes to sell a book.
And we’ll also help you with social media and marketing. And our art department can create custom covers for you and format your ebook if you’re going the self-published route.
We tried to keep our prices reasonable. The more expensive the service, the higher level editor you’re getting. For some reason, I can’t convince them to work for free. :) I promise, I tried.
I hope you’ll check out our site. I hope you’ll recommend us to your friends.
