Holiday Happenings
I love the holidays. I insist the tree go up the weekend after Thanksgiving. I always promise myself that I’m going to get everything done ahead of time so that I can sit back and enjoy the holidays.
It never happens. There are always deadlines and for the last nine years it has never failed that I get edits the week before Christmas. It’s a good problem to have, so I don’t complain much. Plus, it gives me an excuse to order people around. Have I mentioned I hate cleaning house and doing laundry? When my boys ask what I want for Christmas, that’s what I always say.
And I figured out how to get really nice presents from my husband.
He says, “What do you want for Christmas.”
I say, “A Mercedes SUV.” His eyes get really, really big. “Is there anything else, maybe a little smaller.”
“I guess a Kate Spade bag would be okay. There are a couple I really like.”
“Good, good.” Then he walks out holding on to his wallet rather tightly.
A few days later, one of the boys, will come and say, “What do you really want for Christmas? You don’t need another purse. Dad said you wanted a purse. You should get an iPad.”
That’s something I hadn’t thought about, and then on Christmas morning I get an iPad. One year my oldest was worried his dad got the wrong present, so he bought me a Wii. I love that thing. And I love my boys who know me so well.
Oh, I know it’s mercenary, but anyone who has been married for a 100 years like I have, gets it. If I don’t say something, I’ll end up with a blender or a taco maker. One year it was a Tupperware pitcher. I have nothing against Tupperware, but he didn’t get out of the dog house for months on that one. Sure, it should be about peace on earth and goodwill toward men.
But I’m not going to lie, I love me some presents.

The craziest thing I ever got for Christmas was a ceramic cow from an email friend at one of the sites I used to visit. Needless to say, I never put it out, and she never knew how much my family and I disliked it. Lol!

The craziest gift I ever got? I was once given the “As a special bonus” books from when someone ordered the “Who Knew?” infomercial book.

I think I have pretty much always gotten great gifts. Since I am divorced, my mom and sister help my kids shop for me so they know how to get good presents.
One Christmas before we were married …hubby built a huge wood cabinet for me and the doors were cut in a heart shape so when they closed there was a big heart opening. It was so sweet I think he was a freshman in college at the time.

I got cookie sheets one year. I just looked at him. What’s up with that? I know I didn’t give very many ideas, but c’mon cookie sheets? I’d rather had gotten a t-shirt.
I was given a sausage maker from my mother because she overheard me talking to someone about meat and wanted me to be able to make my own. Boy was she surprised when I explained the context and that we were talking about men.

Probably too late to enter for the contest, but I think I’ve got y’all beat: one year, I was going to be celebrating my birthday in Mexico while studying Spanish, so I didn’t have a lot of room in my suitcase, but my husband tucked a small gift in it to be opened on my birthday. Come my birthday, and my roommate, our landlady (who was one of the instructors at the school) and some of the other teachers came by for cake …. I open my present–which was wrapped in a small paper bag– to find three or four booster packs of Magic: The Gathering cards (yeah, I was a player back in the day) and a Greg Olson rookie card (Greg was one of the best pitchers ever, and played for my favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves.) My Mexican friends were stunned.
