Christmas Chicken

I never thought I’d say this, but I miss this Christmas chickens. Let me explain. For most of the time we’ve lived here the lovely little family across the street put out a nativity each Christmas. Mary, Joseph and the wise men and of course baby Jesus were all a part of the scene. But what distinguished this nativity from all others, is that each of the characters were chickens. Think Chicken Little in a Joseph costume. The wooden cutouts caught me off guard the first time I saw them. They were a sweet family, and really their decorations were an extension of that. I thought it a bit corny, but the truth is, those chickens always made me smile. It felt like Christmas when I saw them. The family moved last spring, and a new one has moved in. The new family’s Christmas display is elegant and beautiful. But man, I miss those chickens. I’m looking forward to my husband putting out our lighted candy canes that line the sidewalks and drive. I know, “candy” canes. That’s my husband’s own little bit of corny Christmas designed just for me. I get misty eyed just thinking about it. :-)
